The most common problem we hear from chronic pain patients is “no one understands my pain”. Most patients have seen a variety of medical specialists yet remain frustrated and overwhelmed.
Chronic pain often results in a combination of emotional, social, and behavioral reactions including:
- poor sleep, limited physical activity, reduced participation in family and social activities
- depressed mood, anxiety, anger, irritability, frustration, social isolation
- family conflict, loss of self-identify, chronic worries about the future
- fear of re-injury, fear of medical procedures
- difficulties coping with physical limitations, job loss, and financial stress
These issues can often compound the pain and create a cyclical pattern of pain, distress, and limitations.
Chronic pain management requires more than medication and medical treatment. It requires individualized skills to manage pain effectively. Evidence-based medical guidelines support the effectiveness of behavioral medicine treatment for chronic pain conditions. Most patients are referred by their physicians or surgeons for evaluation and/or treatment with our behavioral medicine staff.
Our behavioral pain management program is a collaborative effort. It is designed to assist you in managing pain by learning a variety of strategies to cope with pain and adapt to the challenges associated with persistent pain or injury.
